Computer-controlled Heated Reactor

The Global FIA Heated Reactor is a microprocessor-controlled device for use in FIA and SIA manifolds. It is comprised of a 1m Super Serpentine Reactor (tubing has 0.030" ID and a volume of ca 450µl) with _-28 fittings potted in a low metal point alloy (melting point: 135°C) together with a cartridge heater. A small thermocouple tracks the temperature of the reactor and provides the feed back to a microprocessor-based temperature controller. The good thermal conductivity properties of the potting alloy ensure a uniform distribution of heat. The heated reactor has similar dimensions to a flashlight battery and is equipped with convenient mounting points.

The temperature controller is a compact 1/32 DIN package and provides PID control of the heater cartridge. The temperature controller is also equipped with a RS-485 port that allows remote computer access to the controller settings, including the set point and the present temperature measured by the thermocouple.

The controller is powered by 24VDC and the heater is powered by 110VAC.

The operating temperature of the Heated Reactor is ambient to 95ºC. The reactor has been found to have excellent heating characteristics and because of its large thermal mass, temperature fluctuations are minimal.
